A Beach Beyond Compare

Navagio Beach is also called The Shipwreck. However, for some reason unbeknownst, the locals insist on saying that in Greek. Well, don’t let that deter you. This secluded, sandy cove may be found on Greece’s Zakynthos Island and is known far beyond the Mediterranean as being one of the world’s most magnificent shorelines.

Navagio Beach History

Smuggler's Ship
Smuggler’s Ship

We probably don’t need to remind you that we threw in that reference to a shipwreck. I mean, those are cool and all … but this isn’t just ANY shipwreck. In fact, it’s the sexiest kind. That’s right, right on shore beachgoers and sun-worshippers alike can explore a real, full-on PIRATE SHIP!

No, not one-eyed Wille from the Goonies. These raiders were real! See, long before Must Do Travels had Done It! – a smuggler/pirate ship discovered and fell in love with this semi-secret cove. The ship was known as Panagiotis (Smuggler’s Cove – in Greek, of course) and while the smugglers and pirates are gone – (having run ashore years ago in inclement weather), the ship is not.

Only by Boat

Agios Nikolaos Village, Zakynthos, Greece
Water Taxi near Zakynthos, Greece

Nestled near Anafotiria village on the north-western coast of Zakynthos Island, this storied beach is marked by sheer limestone cliffs, powder-white sandy beaches and crystalline, azure waters. With those features, it’s not surprising that tourists are so interested in digging their toes in the sand.

While it’s true that the sandy strip can only be accessed by boat, that serves to keep the area a bit less traveled and the beach unspoiled by casual looky-loos. So, join in all the fun and this world-class destinations by taking a boat ride from Porto Vromi – just a half-hour ride by water taxi.

Keep in mind, the best time to visit is in the early hours of the day (before noon), as peak hours see a host of cruise anchored cruise ships and a more beach congested beach.
